Questions to ponder

  • Many classes start with a qualitative "question to ponder" for which the answer is not obvious
  • Example:
  • Consider a person standing in an elevator that is accelerating upward. The upward normal force FN exerted by the elevator floor on the person is
    1. larger than
    2. identical to
    3. smaller than
the downward weight FG of the person.
  • Let students discuss question, show of hands, then have a class discussion
  • Adopted from SCALE-UP "ponderables" and Peer Instruction ConcepTests

Quick hands-on activities

  • Try to roll a ball in a curved path
  • Lift a book or backpack
  • Students physically involved with the learning
