Nature of learning

Many classes based on older view of students as blank slates to be filled with knowledge.  However, students bring previous experience and beliefs to the class that filter and can block learning.  Additionally, just acquiring facts is not enough--making the right connections to other knowledge is key for learning.

Information delivery

Huge quantities of information are constantly available through many channels, yet many classrooms act if the instructor is the only source.

Learning styles

People have a wide variety of learning styles, but typical science classrooms tend to be optimized for textual (not visually) oriented, passive, intuitive learners.

Technology

While science may what brought great technological advances to our society, many science classrooms are technological laggards.
