P01 – Project Selection

Please submit a message to the instructor via email that outlines your choice of project topic.

Each student in the course will perform a independent project. As stated in the syllabus the project will count for 25% of the final grade.

  • Students should create a Juypter notebook that completely documents the background and goals of the project as well as contains Python code that performs calculations to solve the problem posed in the project.
  • Each student will be required to submit the completed notebook and will meet one-on-one with the professor to review the project at least three days in advance of their presentation.
  • Project presentations should last approximately 20 minutes with 5 additional minutes allowed for questions.
  • Project presentations will be scheduled during the last three class meetings of the semester in an order that best suites the entire collection of project topics.

A few potential project topics are listed below but you are encouraged to submit ideas that are of special interest to you even if they are not included on the list below.

  • Newman 8.12-8.13 – Orbit of Earth / Planetary Orbits
  • Newman 8.14 – Quantum Oscillators
  • Newman 8.15 – The Double Pendulum
  • Newman 8.16 – The Three-Body Problem
  • Newman 8.17 – Cometary Orbits and the Bulirsch-Stoer Method
  • Newman 9.08 – The Schrödinger Equation: Crank-Nicholson Method
  • Newman 9.09 – The Schrödinger Equation: Spectral Method
  • Realistic Projectile Motion – Including drag and altitude dependent density.
  • Throwing a Baseball – The Effects of Spin
