FUSE, Grad School Shopper, and Fellowships
Dear Students,
Here are a few items of interest for anyone doing research or considering graduate school in the future.
- Faculty-Undergraduate Student Engagement (FUSE) grant applications for Spring 2023 are now available. Student applications are due to faculty mentors October 24, and complete applications must be submitted no later than October 31. If you haven’t, talk to your faculty mentor about this great opportunity!
- The Grad School Shopper is a complete, FREE guide to U.S. physics and astronomy graduate programs published by the American Institute of Physics. You can search by degree, field, or location! A printed version should also be available in the SPS room. There is also a companion magazine that provides some extra guidance that may be helpful.
- Physics and astronomy applications to the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF-GRFP) are due October 21; assistance with writing or other aspects of the application process is available from Lindsey Houchin, Assistant Director of the WKU Office of Scholar Development.
- The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program is now accepting applications until December 1, 2022. SMART offers scholarships for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students currently pursuing a degree in STEM. SMART scholars receive full tuition, annual stipends, internships, and guaranteed employment with the DoD after graduation. For more information, visit www.smartscholarship.org or email smart@smartscholarship.org.
- The Barry M Goldwater Scholarship program is accepting nominations between now and early January 2023. Goldwater scholarships support academic expenses of up to $7500 for two years for outstanding undergraduates in STEM fields. Nominees must have between 1 semester and 2 years remaining before graduation, a GPA of 3.0 or greater, U.S. citizenship, and must be nominated by their host college or university. WKU nominees must first pass an internal screening process and competition; WKU provides guidance on how to write a good application. Interested students should contact Dr. Matthew Nee, the WKU Campus Representative for the program.
