Summer Internships
Dear Students,
Happy January! I hope you all had a good winter break and are getting off to a good start for the spring semester. In case some of you don’t know that it’s internship season, I wanted to draw your attention to some of the many internship opportunities that are on offer for this summer. These can provide a broad range of research or even industry experience depending on your interest. They pay you to spend most of the summer at a specific institute or university, usually with a group of other interns, where you will learn about a new field, contribute to it, and report on it in a professional setting — often a national conference. Your travel is also paid for. Many of these internship programs have deadlines starting around the end of January, so I strongly encourage you to look at these and consult with your advisor as needed — certainly to ask for recommendation letters!
I won’t try to list individual internships here but will instead provide links to a few major programs, which have their own listings of what they offer:
- National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF-REU)
- National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Internship Program
- Department of Energy Internships
The Kentucky Space Grant Consortium provides stipend support for a limited number of Kentucky students who are accepted for NASA internships. Students are welcome to notify NASA KY that they have completed their NASA profile and applications by emailing nasa@uky.edu.
