Individual instructors pick and choose

Collaboration to develop institutionalize reformed course(s)

Advantages:

  • Preserves instructor's right to teach as he/she chooses.
  • Requires less departmental commitment.
  • Don't have to make compromises with other faculty in planning.

Advantages:

  • Can make sure all elements of course are working together.
  • Can pool experience and efforts of several instructors for making a better course.
  • Could apply for outside funds for equipment, additional man power.

Disadvantages:

  • Limited support for instructors trying innovative methods.
  • Merely adding interactive elements to a transmistionist course can reduce effectiveness or even backfire.
  • Efforts lost when someone else takes over.

Disadvantages:

  • Significant commitment by department and instructors.
  • Instructors new to the format will have to learn to teach in a new way.
  • Messy compromises may be required.
