The Western Kentucky Physics Olympics: Frequently Asked Questions

Surprising Shadows

  1. Does the image need to be any certain size or resolution?

No minimum is specified, but the judges cannot award points if they cannot identify the important details in the images.

Camera Obscura

  1. We have one camera that is more accurate but only works with very bright scenes. Can we bring a back-up pinhole projector to the competition?

Any number of devices can be created and brought to the competition on Saturday 25 February, but only one device can be used in the competition. Teams will not be allowed to switch cameras during the competition.

  2. Is it fair to use mirrors and lenses to project our image onto a different platform, or does this violate the instructions?

The competition is limited to pinhole projectors. It would be allowable to use flat mirrors to redirect the light from the pinhole. Incorporating lenses would make this a different instrument, and will not be acceptable.
