students as laboratory assistants for the undergraduate labs and as tutors
for the Physics Help Center for the 2008-09 academic year. These
positions are primarily intended to be staffed by physics majors. If

Student Research Positions in the Applied Physics Institute

Research Associate Position in the Applied Physics Institute
Western Kentucky University, Applied Physics Institute, is seeking applicants for a Research Associate. The position reports directly to the API Senior Applications Engineer. This is a full-time position with funding through May 2009 at the Western Kentucky University Center for Research and Development.
Responsibilities:
- Performs grant/contract-based research and development.
- Supervises students.
- Designs and constructs components for nuclear and wireless instrumentation.
- Performs analysis of technical data.
Required Qualifications:
- BS Degree in Electrical Engineering with a strong Physics and Math background.
- 1-2 years experience in research and development in a university environment.
- US Citizenship.
- Ability to obtain security clearance.
- Experience in design and construction of nuclear instrumentation and electronics of neutron generators.
- Expertise in nuclear-based bulk detection of CBRNE threats.
- Experience in design and construction of wireless instrumentation.
- Expertise in Labview, PIC C, and microchip programming languages.
- Expertise in Multisim, Eagle Layout Editor, and utilizing rapid prototype circuit board machines.
- Experience in working with hazardous, explosive, and radioactive materials.
- Familiarity with the areas of research and projects described by Applied Research Institute website via http://www.wku.edu/API/.
Salary Grade: 107 Expected Minimum Salary: $28,008.00 annually.

Computer Specialist Position in the Applied Physics Institute
Western Kentucky University, Applied Physics Institute, Cyber Defense Laboratory is seeking applicants for a Computer Specialist. The position reports directly to the CDL Director. This is a full-time position with funding through May 2009 at the Western Kentucky University Center for Research and Development.
Responsibilities:
- Performs grant/contract-based research and development.
- Develops and manages Information Systems security.
- Provides analysis related to the design, development, and implementation of hardware for products.
- Develops test strategies, devices, and systems, while enhancing customer relations with government sponsors.
- Fosters interdisciplinary communications and supervises students.
Required Qualifications:
- College Degree plus 1-2 years experience in computer sandbox (both hardware and software) design, construction and maintenance.
- 1-2 years experience in design, construction, and maintenance of PVMs or Linux-based computer clusters.
- US Citizenship.
- Ability to obtain security clearance.
- Expertise in collecting network traffic patterns on a wide variety of architectures.
- Expertise with network analysis tools to include Wire Shark® and SNORT®.
- Familiarity and understanding of Department of Defense network systems and network security protocols.
- Expertise in the construction and maintenance (both hardware and software) of wireless ad-hoc networks.
- Knowledge of virtual and/or online deviant subcultures and behaviors.
- Experience in social research and knowledge of accepted sociological methodologies.
