"Beyond the discovery of the Higgs Boson"

January 28, 2019 @ 4:00 pm in EST 260

Abstract

One of the most anticipated and important scientific discoveries of the 21st century was that of the Higgs Boson particle. I review the basic premises which necessitate the presence of a Higgs field in the standard model of particle physics. Then I discuss the bosonic decay modes through which the Higgs was discovered at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Moving beyond the discovery, I present the first evidence of fermionic decay modes of the Higgs Boson, and discuss the recent excitement about its lepton flavor violating decay modes.
